Phenotyping

Phenotyping, which is the evaluation of plant behaviour in various environmental conditions, is mainly done in directly in the field covering the spectra of conditions faced by our farmers customers.

Dedicated phenotypic trialling is performed in varied conditions that encompass abiotic stress conditions like drought, heat, and cold temperature as well as abiotic stress conditions with pressure from insects and pathogens (fungi and virus mainly).

Limagrain has developed proprietary biostatistical tools, which help our breeders in phenotyping. We have deployed these new technologies, including sensors, which are positioned in the field to precisely capture the variations in soil and climate conditions. This data is automatically included to make key breeding decisions. Limagrain scientists are now evaluating the use of rovers and drones to capture images that are used to get extra and more accurate data to describe the response of the plants in their growing environmental conditions.
